Hi guys. Sorry to ask but Batteries are not my thing.. so I am learning.
I am going to for now get Lead acid battery for the cityel x 3
I have seen the same ones that came out of the cityel in a battery store for £160 each x 3

ok

but then I have seen leisure battery for caravan cheaper £100 each ..

I am told that the caravan ones do work but the plates are thinner?? is that correct?

Should I just go for it and buy the better ( original ) batteries at £160 each x 3

second question?

so when I have got the batteries, what do I need to do.. to take care of them.. as they are expensive and I don't want to ruin them.
any advice would be very thank full..

hello,
at first buy the originals, the cheaper will be destroied verry soon (a caravan takes 10A a city el takes 100A)
at second, use 3 loader each for one batterie and install 3 voltage meter in cockpit so that you can see each battery when you drive, and dont drive them under 11Volt,
do that and see how many month they work, and when have done that, you may will buy LiFePo batteries,
best regards
wolle

HI Wolle
Good idea ref the 3 Meters I will use the ones I have had for my RC model boats.. great idea.. so being as I am rubbish at electrics.. I need to take the supply from each battery up to the meter display? and it will read each battery not all 3 a t the same time? eg 36v?

now.. you say how many months they will work..... is that a bad thing? as in will they not last very long then?
am I throwing away £500 on the more expensive batteries?

I am learning so very sorry if my question is basic..

Hi,

the old stylish acid batteries do not like high current for long times. The Ah given as technical Data ist for discharge over ten hours (C10) or over 100 hours (C100). The City EL can discharge them in less than two hours. So the rating for C1 is the interessant one - there are very few Batteries where this rating is given...

As a rule over the thumb you can say the C1 Rating ( so the Amperehours you can really use) is 50-70% of the C10 Rating. A C100 Rating is useless for a decision.

A second thing you can use is the Ampere rating (the Number with only A, not Ah). This is the maximum current the Battery can handle. The higher, the better.

The EL uses high Currents for a relativly short time (from the View of the Battery). Camping batteries are more optimated for low an mid currents over longer times.

The three Voltage Meters Wolfgang mentioned are very useful in seeing discharged cells earlier, what is saving battery life.

Take batterys whrer you can refill water, because the balancing of the cells ist doing by charging until all cells are full. Full cells that are still charging lost water, you should be able to replace it. The mentioned three chargers make this effect less, but still not complete go away.

Greetings,

Werner

yep, taken that on board thanks... OK so yes the better battery it is then..

is this one OK??

red one: Power Supply

yellow one: Voltage Input that is shown on the Display

There is a circuit diagram below in teh description...

right yes sorry now I see that..
OK so you can either have it connected to the " + " and it shows all the time the display or you can connect it via a switch that then shows you the reading when it's pressed? if that is the case I like that idea. then it's not on all the time..

Gel batterys are not good because of the mentioned balancing of the cells. The balancing overloads the cells that are first full, but with gel batteries the gas can not get out... The gas bubbles brings higher internal resistance, whitch is very bad for high currents.

Hello Surfer71,
first: I understand but my english is very very very bad-sorry
anyway, a good idea is, the acid batterys are using within a temperature not under 15°C. If you under dieper temperatur the voltage go unter aktion extremly to low. Perhaps you can parking in a warm area or you can inside the cityel construkc a battery-heater to get betwen 20-25°C
greetings
Enno

Hi Enno, your English is way better than my German.. :)

OK.. yes I understand.. battery Temperature.. at the momment it's parked out the front in the cold and yes it's about to go into winter.. so I get what you mean.. I will need to look into keeping them warm..

What do people use to get them warm??
