May i ask you about the build year of your car and its exact model name?
CITI-JET 6, but Not sure what the build date are. I assume it is 2007 where it was first registered.

magic eye' on the display board
AH that's what it is for! I did wonder what that small LED looking thing did. I guess it measures UV light?

I see you started a new thread about your Citi-Jet 6 - very nice.
Yeah thought I would get going! Fun to share the experiences.

No just the ambient visible light in the cockpit. It does not work very well as you still can't read the old display in bright sunlight. It darkens the display at night time, though and that does work (a little). Keep in mind that my car was made in 1994 and they hadn't very bright LEDs at that time. One could replace the LEDs for speed and capacity, but the 7-segment things are only available as old stock.

Are those special? Generally 7-segments are very widely available. Or are you talking about the driver IC?
With the simplified design of the display. I don't think it would take a lot of time to reverse engineer the display to throw an Arduino on and make it display the speed and such.

Its the 7-segment digits and unfortunately yes, they are. They are available at Mouser - i think but cost a fortune and still are NOS - old stock.
The SAA1064 in the DIP case is no longer to buy, but its SSOP variant would be available at ebay, but still expensive (around 20 euros per chip) and there are six of those chips on the display.

So yeah, sooner or later an RPico or STM32 needs to replace the display board electronics once i have salvaged the Citi-Jet 5 display completely.

@ Matthias I didn't understand everything, but the green and yellow LEDs are lit in the pictures. Shouldn't they be off when the car is stationary? With the 4 and 5 series, reverse gear doesn't engage as long as something is lit? Please translate. Thanks. Greetings, and a nice, stylish, modern car.

Indeed, the LEDs should be off without motor current, but the test setup leaves the shunt connections open, displaying nothing useful. Once built into the car with the shunt connections the car runs as expected.
