Hi,

First off: I'm very sorry I don't speak German, and Google Translate doesn't work on your website for some reason, so I'm having a very hard time understanding the information on your website. I have to manually copy and paste the text to translate.

My problem:

I have a 1991 City El serial number 2606 which I bought on eBay for £550 and with 1200 x 18650 lifepo4 batteries @ 36v she runs quite nicely :)

However I have discovered a previous owner has possibly done a "speed" modification to the Thrige-Titan motor and put a switch by the hand brake. The switch has gone, but the wiring is there. Can anyone tell me what this might do?

Here are the photos:

This is my City-EL (She has no roof because some hooligans turned it over at night for the previous owner).

These are the wires by the hand brake:

One of the wires goes here:

And the other one goes here:

Any help is greatly appreciated :) This week I will get her government inspection and then hopefully begin using sunlight to go to the shops :)

Thanks

Hi Captain,
i think with the switch you can connect/unconect the compount wire in the thrige titan Motor. So the "El" runs faster or not.
Many greetings Enno

Just like Enno wrote, this green one is for the compound field of your thrige motor. You can regard this as a device to have a bit more power at start (if switched on) and less velocity at the end and vice versa if switched off..
Am i bit busy at the moment, but will try to help more later..

Greetings from Germany, Sascha

Hi,

main answer ist already there. One Point: Don.t switch off with open throttle! This is maybe the cause why the switch brokes.

Greetings,

Werner

HI, I am also from the UK and I have the yellow Cityel you might have seen about..

So as said above the wire I think.... that's been cut into is a restrictor to the motor.. Much like a 50cc moped they have a limiter fitted... that's your 3rd wire.. cut that and it's FULL power... well... I say full power.. it's just that bit more you might notice it. LOL.

Your chap may have thought he could switch the switch to gain more power but I am lead to understand that's not as simple as that... so it's best just taken out..

I am not in Bristol I am in Southampton.. I am aware of another 2 Cityel's ( 1 cityel and 1 miniel ) with in an hour of me..
it would be good to get in contact.. I am no electrical expert.. but learning. I found the CItyel Facebook page it be most excellent as it also converts all languages into your home nation.. so very easy to have a 3 way conversation with the Danish and the Germans and our selves... so the flow of information is much better and they can also see very clearly we are one of them with the same goal... that is to keep these moving..

Ref your one..

Now I do think I know that one.. had a orange stripe on the roof.. if that is the case it's top was broken in a crash going too fast round a corner.. it may have been repaired and then it's happened again... I do know of a top but your have to drive to Holland to get it and SHARPISH.. as it's about to head it's way to Denmark! doubling your journey.. tops are SUPER hard to get hold of when your in the UK..

but join in on the Cityel page on Facebook and your find me on there.. oh and sorry I already bought the number plate C17YEL
I might be interested in your CItyel if you want to sell it.. only as I am starting to get into them more now.. but great to hear about UK Cityel owner!

Hi Surfer71,

you have to difference beetween torque and RPMs. The wire we discuss about is feeding the compound coil. With active wire you have more torque but less max.RPM. Without the wire you have more max.RPMs but less torque that means less acceleration. Thats why there is the idea to switch beetween the two possibilities, BUT remember, ist is a coil, so switch off under power will result in an arc at the contacts. So dont switch off with open throttle if you dont have done something against the arc!

Infos about the Thringe Titan Motor:

Werner

Hi Mark,
it is no problem to run without it. Personally i do prefer do have this switch, i mean this possibility to change betwenn having the compund field turned on and off due to reduce the power at start (too brutal otherwise) but be a bit faster in the end..
At the moment, i am running without it by myself due to a damage..

Hi Mark,
unfortunately i am not. But i rather think i know what you mean: some guys build additional wirings to use hp-chargers to supply the CityEL. Just ask wchriss for further informations.
Hmm, diagrams concerning Curtis controllers... I will contact a fellow that is an expert in this CityEL electric things.
I could rather more help you in case of cardiac arrest starting it with a heart defibrillator..

Nevertheless, we will surely help you..

Hat hier jemand Reparaturdiagramme fuer den Curtis? Mark hat scheinbar was zu reparieren und brauch unsere Unterstuetzung.
Und gibts dieses HP-Lader-Projekt noch?

Hi Mark,
what kind of diagrams are you looking for? Wiring diagrams of the curtis' external circuitry or electronic diagrams of the pcb's inside the Curtis?

Hi Lars,
should be the internal wiring due to a wracked controller..
